New Studies Show Nursing Workforce Critical to Success of Health Reform

Health Affairs unveiled a series of six studies examining the nursing workforce in the context of health reform. The papers were released at a forum presented by Health Affairs and the Center to Champion Nursing in America (CCNA) that featured a lively discussion among policy-makers, nursing leaders and researchers, and health reform experts.

 

According to one of the studies, the continuing recession will contribute to an easing or temporary end to the current registered nurse (RN) shortage, as older nurses delay retirement or return to work, and part-time nurses seek full-time jobs.

Gains On Uninsured, Reducing Shortages Of Nurses/Physicians, Health Care Funding Among Session's Successes

The Texas Legislature made significant improvements to Texas health care that will benefit consumers as well as health care providers. Small businesses and low-income individuals in the Texas High Risk Pool will find health insurance coverage more affordable, and college students will find health coverage more accessible. Texas nursing schools will be able to enroll more students for the fall semester, which will produce more graduates to ease the state's nursing shortage. Several measures passed that will increase the supply of physicians in rural and other underserved areas.

Scientists Identify Molecular Powerbrokers Involved In Cancer's Spread

Scientists have known for some time that biological molecules interact with one another in a similarly complex pattern. Now researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine have determined that hamstringing these molecular powerbrokers is a good way to derail processes such as cancer development.

UCLA Anderson Forecast: Economy Healing But Not Out Of Hospital Yet

In its second quarterly report of 2009, the UCLA Anderson Forecast upgrades the condition of the national economy, moving it out of "intensive care" while noting that it is still "very sick."

 

The Forecast sees the gross domestic product improving from negative growth in the second quarter of this year to nearly perceptible growth in the final quarter while acknowledging that this tepid growth will be accompanied by an unemployment rate that will continue to rise well into 2010 and into double digits.
