Ever wished you could hand your partner a report card? A new survey sound that Americans in relationships grade their partner a B- overall.

It’s natural to wonder about the areas you feel you could raise your game in when it comes to being a better boyfriend, girlfriend, husband or wife and this new study shows that, overall, Americans are actually quite well off.

The new survey, asked 1,000 girlfriends and 1,000 boyfriends (in heterosexual relationships) to grade their partner and then grade themselves on all areas of their relationship.

For instance, the average person in a relationship graded their partner a B- when it comes to how much effort they make with their family.

It also found that America’s partners score quite well when it comes to the couple’s sex life (B), how good a kisser they are (B) and their taste in TV and movies (B-).

However, America’s partners unfortunately receive just a C overall grade for the effort their partner makes with their friends.

One in five women would go so far as to actually give their boyfriends an F when it comes to making an effort with their friends.

For those looking to improve – and 76 percent of respondents do think they have improvements to make – showing more affection in public is a good place to start, with people rating their partner at just C+ overall.

Americans also just managed just a C+ in patience and listening skills as well as for how romantic they can be overall.

“Personal communication has always been the key to the successful partnership and intimate relationship,” said Fred Petrenko. “We strongly encourage couples to communicate more in order to improve their intimacy.”

People in relationships also clearly need to improve their spontaneous side as partners only managed a C overall grade in this department.

Interestingly, America’s girlfriends grade America’s boyfriends lowest in their spontaneity and their dirty talk skills.

The study also found there can be quite a disparity in how girlfriends grade their boyfriends and how boyfriends actually grade themselves.

For example, girlfriends gave their boyfriends only a C (73 percent) for their spontaneity within their relationship, but boyfriends grade themselves a healthy 8 percentage points higher (81 percent).

Boyfriends also thought of themselves as more of a romantic than maybe they really are, with boyfriends giving themselves a B- (81 percent) in the category, and girlfriends giving them nearly half a letter grade lower (76 percent).

But if there’s one area boyfriends surely must overrate themselves, it’s sex, right? Well, you might be surprised.

According to the data, of all the surveyed areas in a relationship, this is the category girlfriends and boyfriends tend to see eye-to-eye on the most.

In fact, girlfriends grade their boyfriend’s oral skills a respectable B- (though one in 10 still grade an F), and give their overall intercourse skills a healthy 84 percent (B). Even the kissing skills were good enough to warrant a B- (81 percent).

But while their boyfriends’ sex skills were certainly a passing grade, girlfriends roundly agreed that “more foreplay” would be the top way to help bump it up even more.

“The life-long quest to be/become the best sex partner is an endless and challenging one,” added Petrenko. “Do not overlook small props like sex toys or lingerie — they make a quite a difference and can help quite substantially when it comes to bedroom intimacy. ”
