SAUSALITO, CA (ASRN.ORG) -- In the 50 years since the UConn Health Center was established, the field of health care has undergone monumental changes. From advances in technology and medicine to the way patients utilize hospitals, the interaction between patients and caregivers has been transformed in virtually every aspect.
SAUSALITO, CA (ASRN.ORG) -- At age 5, the last age at which I had a normal body mass, the school football coach's son punched me in the face. I have no memory of what prompted this; small boys can be a strange and violent people. I tasted blood before I felt pain. I am usually quick with a clever line, but the perfect comeback always escaped me in those moments.
SAUSALITO, CA (ASRN.ORG) -- On a fine spring day in 2008, surprising words cropped up on my computer. I had logged onto Google to pick up some biographical information about the United Nations Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, Ambassador Stephen Lewis, of Toronto, as part of my writing work.
SAUSALITO, CA (ASRN.ORG) -- In Nicole Holofcener's recent film, "Please Give," a middle-aged woman acidly characterizes her grandmother's hair color as being "stuck in a shade of menopausal red." As a woman on the verge of menopause whose hair has been getting redder by the year, I would have felt stung by this line -- except that by the time I heard it, I'd already decided to make 2011 the year I finally go gray.
SAUSALITO, CA (ASRN.ORG) -- I grow vegetables in my backyard. I wear organic makeup. I grind my own flax seeds. I write a yoga column called "Enlightened Motherhood," for crying out loud. But two months ago I had a Brazilian Blowout. Despite recent warning that the conditioning and straightening formula contains high levels of formaldehyde -- a carcinogen and, yes, the stuff they use on dead bodies -- I want another one. And another one after that.
