SAUSALITO -- As reported in just last month's "World News & Nursing Report," Dr. Mario Raviglione, the Director of the STOP TB program at WHO stated that "If it keeps spreading, as it has in South Africa, then we are really in trouble."

Dr. Kevin Fenton, director of CDC’s National Center for HIV, STD and TB Prevention said, " The risk of XDR TB appears to be low in the United States. However, due to the ease with which TB can spread, XDR TB will continue to pose a serious risk to the United States as long as it exists anywhere else in the world."

People with HIV/AIDS are at severe risk. Dr. Mario Raviglione, added, "More concerning is the emergence of XDR-TB among people living with HIV/AIDS, where is has been associated with a more than 90% case fatality rate. There must no delay in putting those measures in place to halt the spread of XDR-TB."
