Cancer Care - A Need for New Guidelines to safeguard Oncology Nurses
The majority of oncology nurses in the United States are located in university-affiliated hospitals serving cancer patients in the medical oncology setting. Most of them work from protocols and perform procedures traditionally performed by physicians with some having a prescriptive authority (Kinney et.al, 1997). Changing trends in Health Care has thrown many challenges to Oncology Nursing like providing greater number and variety of treatments on an outpatient basis in a situation where there is a shift from indemnity insurance to a managed care environment to help control the costs.
Has California's Nurse Staffing Ratio Improved Patient Care?
A recent study on the effect of nurse-to-patient ratios on care in California hospitals has concluded that hiring more Registered Nurses has little effect on patient care especially in two areas, namely, patient falls and bed sores (Donaldson, 2005). In this context, California is the first state in the United States to enact a legislation requiring hospitals to meet minimum staffing standards, limiting the numbers of patients that Registered Nurses and Licensed Vocational Nurses may care for at any one time.
