Nurses Without Borders

SAUSALITO, CA (ASRN.ORG) -- We tend to think of nurses as yet another item on that expensive list labeled “medical care,” but around the country about 15,000 nurses, most of them acting as volunteers, provide elderly support services free of charge. The members of the faith community nurse movement, as it’s called, are available to anyone, regardless of religion.

Aging Without Children

SAUSALITO, CA (ASRN.ORG) -- Ann Logan and her three sisters grew up in Delaware; none of them have children. Their stepbrother and seven first cousins on both sides are childless, as well. “Each of us had different reasons,” she said.

Can Nurse House Calls Make a Difference in New Mothers Lives?

SAUSALITO, CA (ASRN.ORG) -- For centuries, midwives have played a cherished part in many women's pregnancies by offering guidance and medical care from conception through birth. Indeed, an ingenious social initiative -- conceived by Philadelphia's Nurse-Family Partnership -- asks just that question.

In Cash We Trust, But Unions We Bust

SAUSALITO, CA (ASRN.ORG) -- Recent events in Washington and Wisconsin suggest that maybe we should just go ahead and change the national motto to something more truly reflective of today's America. Forget "e pluribus unum" with its elitist overtones. Also, what people who make a big thing over "In God We Trust" really mean isn't so much that they approve of the deity, as that God approves of them.

Can Your Dog Multiply Large Numbers?

SAUSALITO, CA (ASRN.ORG) -- All dog owners tend to think their dogs are amazing, just as all parents think their children are above average. But after you've read “Amazing Dogs: A Cabinet of Canine Curiosities,” by Jan Bondeson, Rover's skill at fetching might look a little less impressive. Can your dog carry on a conversation in German, like Don the Talking Dog?
