But, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, "the proportion of male registered nurses has more than tripled since 1970, from 2.7 percent to 9.6 percent, and the proportion of male licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses has more than doubled from 3.9 percent to 8.1 percent."

The rush to isolate and treat the sick, though, meant many were too fearful to take in the children whose parents had succumbed to the deadly virus.
Patients are increasingly turning to nurse practitioners instead of physicians for a less expensive healthcare alternative.
