The 2013 annual Gallup poll of 1,031 U.S. adults, released this week, found that 82 percent rank nurses as “very high” or “high” in both categories. Having nurses chosen for the 11th consecutive year as the country’s most honest and ethical profession is both humbling and validating to nurses.

I grew up with a mother who was a Registered Nurse (RN). I recall being a curious adolescent and asking my mom why nurses always seemed so anxious and unhappy? Without hesitation she flatly stated, “Because we have to work with doctors.” She seemed to reflect and then sadly she said, “And we don’t treat each other very well.”
Cal State Los Angeles is turning students away from its nursing program because there is not enough people to teach them. It’s a similar situation happening at other schools around the state. In a recent healthcare forum Cal State in Bakersfield acknowledged the shortage of nurses in the central valley and the challenges of recruitment for the region, but they’re not alone.
