Nurses at a New York hospital are surprising some of their patients who are battling cancer with a romantic date night with their spouses.

Maggie Knight, a nurse at Stony Brook University Hospital, came up with the idea after noticing how depressed one of her favorite patients seemed after being hospitalized for months.

“I walked out and I thought, ‘Man, we have to make him feel more at home. So, how about a date night?’” Knight remembered.

After planning the date night with the help of the patient’s wife, Knight surprised the man with dinner from one of the couple’s favorite restaurants, music and decorations.

Knight said she was moved to tears by the man’s happiness.

“He’s a great person and I couldn’t have been happier to give that to him while he’s in the hospital,” she said.

Meg Pearse’s husband was a recent recipient of one of the surprised date nights.

“It was just quiet time for us to sit and talk over dinner which we hadn’t done and forgot about what had just happened for three weeks,” Pearse said.

Since August, Knight and other nurses have surprised five other patients with the special dinners.
