Earthquake in Haiti: "Operation Give Back"

January 28, 2010 -Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of the devastating earthquake in Port-au-Prince and the surrounding areas in Haiti and all those involved in relief efforts.  Thank you for your interest in assisting. As you well realize by now, the situation on the ground in Haiti is a chaotic one--lack of infrastructure, scarce resources and compromised supply chain logistics and difficult coordination, limited communications, security concerns, etc.

All who are considering responding should be part of an established, well organized team with ties on the ground and a means of ensuring adequate supplies, security, food and water, etc.  Prior experience in disaster response or other austere environments is a tremendous asset. At a minimum, we strongly recommend that you educate and prepare yourself in advance of any deployment so as to ensure your own safety and those around you.

We continue to update these pages with information that we trust as we receive it from those involved first hand in coordinating response efforts.  The Google map and other "social media" try to provide a broader view and incorporate information that we have learned from media and other sources.  These are offered to provide a better sense of "situational awareness" for those involved in the response as well as those working to support them.

The situation will continue to evolve and hopefully improve.  We expect this crisis and the response efforts to continue for some months and there will be myriad opportunities to contribute as it progresses.

If you are interested in being a first responder in future disasters, please consider registering with one of the relief agencies noted above, or through the US government with a Disaster Management Assistance Team (DMAT) or International Medical-Surgical ResponseTeam (IMSURT).
